what is FFVIII-2?

Welcome to Final Fantasy VIII-2 (FFVIII-2.org),
the role-playing community based upon the Squaresoft game for the PlayStation and PC, "Final Fantasy VIII".

FFVIII-2 is a community 'storytelling' RP forum, following the story of Final Fantasy VIII from an alternative perspective. Each member plays an original character, and with the guidance of formal missions and major canon events, shows his/her own view of the game's events as well as original, non-canon scenarioes.

The focus of FFVIII-2 is the forum, where members 'role-play' stories, large and small, using original characters, separate to those of the game but immersed in the very same world.

Don't worry if you've never played Final Fantasy VIII, or you don't know how to role-play yet - neither of these need get in the way. The stories of FFVIII-2 are told through events and missions, in which you can play an active part. While it is undoubtedly helpful to have a good knowledge of the game, it is possible to play along, learning the story as it rolls out.

Information on the game is provided in the pages linked on the left. After catching up on the story, should you so wish to, and reading the topics in the Essential Reading section of the forums, you're ready to join in and make a character.

For those who are daunted by the thought of role-playing at FFVIII-2, this can be easily remedied. On the forums there are instructions on how to role-play at FFVIII-2. This is recommended reading for everyone, including those who are already confident with role-play, as rules may differ to those of other forums. There are also tips on role-playing in a page linked on the left.

MAJOR UPDATE

The forums have been cleaned of all posts based on the former storyline, for the introduction of a new one:

A new storyline is being introduced for FFVIII-2, commencing the first week of July 2009. This is a replacement of all former storylines, and will require resubmission of profiles, to accommodate for major changes. This new storyline is precisely the story of the video game, meaning that for the first time characters will play through the events of the game itself, as they happen.

Events will be revealed by:

Major missions — canon missions from the game; members will be able to participate in as many as possible. E.G. the Dollet SeeD examination, Battle of the Gardens, etc.
Minor missions - non-canon missions that run parallel to the missions of the game. E.G. missions parallel to: Timber occupation relief, Deling City assassination attempt
Newsflashes - important global events revealed in a special sub-forum. These will have an immediate effect on all ongoing events.

The story will begin formally with the SeeD examination as seen in the game, taking place in the Fire Cavern and Dollet. Characters who are in training for SeeD may be eligible for this examination.

From now on, not all characters are required to be cadets or SeeDs.

The three separate Gardens are making a return, each retaining their original qualities from the game. Therefore, members will be able to choose to become GF wielders from Balamb Garden, melee/tactical specialists from Trabia Garden or cadets in Galbadia Garden (leading to soldiers in the Galbadian Army - NOT SeeD).

These changes will lead characters to find themselves for and/or against each other according to the story. For example, members with characters in the Galbadian Army will naturally be in conflict against SeeD characters, played by other members, especially in high-pressure situations like the Battle of the Gardens. Unlike in the former forum setup, members will not necessarily always work together, but find themselves in contention with the members of the other Gardens, whether in a 'positive' rivalry or actual armed conflict, all this within the framework of the storyline.

As such, members will need to resubmit existing profiles or create new ones, including their chosen Garden. Once chosen, members will also be able to transfer Garden as cadets (ONLY), should they change their mind.

STAFF WANTED

We are currently looking for Mission Coordinators to organise and run missions.

As a Mission Coordinator, you will create missions for groups of characters to participate in, allowing them to leave the usual confines of Garden and the local surroundings. Once a mission has been created, you will follow its progression, using non-playable characters (NPCs), or possibly your own character, to guide the direction of the mission. You will introduce new elements to the mission as it progresses in this manner, while allowing participants to respond spontaneously and independently.

You will be in frequent contact with the admins and other Mission Coordinators in order to plan and conduct missions together.

Four Mission Coordinator positions are open. Anyone can apply, so long as you have registered an account at FFVIII-2 and posted a character profile. We [the admins] will choose the Mission Coordinators based on the quality and originality of the profile and other posts. New members with excellent profiles will also be considered.

In the message, please link to your profile and, if you like, to any examples of your best RPing that you would like to show, whether from FFVIII-2 or elsewhere (this is not mandatory).
